Subscription plans for recurring access

Selling the same work twice is harder than selling continued access to it. A subscription plan makes access the product and lets the platform enforce it.

What a plan can unlock

A whole store
Everything you publish, for as long as the subscription runs — the model for an ongoing library.
One product
Recurring access to a single item that keeps being updated.
A test series
A subscription that grants attempts for as long as the series runs.
A bundle
A defined set, priced as one offer.

How the billing runs

Pick weekly, monthly or yearly, and offer a free trial if you want one — the subscriber gets the full plan first and the initial charge lands after the trial. Razorpay then collects each cycle automatically through UPI Autopay or a card mandate, and emails a GST invoice each time.

A failed payment does not immediately cut access off: a grace window keeps the entitlement alive while retries run. Subscribers cancel themselves and keep access to the end of the period they have already paid for.

Why access is reliable

Every subscription grants an entitlement, and the entitlement is the one thing checked on every gated action — a download, a test attempt, a metered feature. There is no second list to keep in sync, which is what usually breaks when access is managed by hand.

Pricing changes and existing subscribers

Subscribers are grandfathered onto the plan they signed up on. The price and limits they saw stay theirs while the subscription is active; new pricing applies to new subscribers, or if an existing one switches plans themselves.

What this does not do

Worth knowing before you plan around it.

  • Recurring collection is Razorpay-only, in Indian Rupees, via UPI Autopay or card mandates.
  • Cycles already paid for are not refundable; cancelling stops future charges rather than reversing past ones.
  • Metered usage already consumed is not refunded on cancellation. The consumption ledger is append-only and is the record.

Common questions

When does a subscription start?

As soon as the first payment is confirmed — access is granted immediately, with no manual approval. Where a free trial is included the subscriber gets the full plan first and the initial charge lands after the trial window.

What happens when a renewal fails?

Retries run while a grace window keeps the entitlement active, so a temporary failure does not lock a paying subscriber out. Access ends only if the subscription ultimately lapses.

Can subscribers cancel themselves?

Yes, from billing settings, with no support ticket. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current paid period.
